Sustainability has taken on an increasingly important role in the technical development and production of banknotes. In this context, the application of Circular Economy principles—made possible through collaboration among multiple stakeholders—has become essential for advancing environmentally
responsible solutions.
It was through this alignment of efforts that the More Sustainable Housenote was created, inspired by the host city of HSP 2025—Rio de Janeiro, as a tribute to its natural and cultural richness.
Based on the belief that Circular Economy initiatives require the active cooperation of diverse actors across the value chain, this project brings together several technical innovations aimed at reducing environmental impact, including:
-
Mineral oil-free inks, which contribute to reduced emissions and improved end-of-life management;
-
Recycled fibers + sisal:recycled fibers sourced from the Tran$forma Initiative combined with sisal fibers, providing maintained security and durability while improving sustainability;
-
Plastic-free substrate reinforcement, derived from residual vegetable oils, replacing fossil-based components and improving biodegradability.
This presentation will explore how the implementation of Circular Economy concepts—supported by strategic technical partnerships—can deliver
measurable benefits in terms of material performance, durability, and
environmental impact in banknote production.
