The market is consistently continuing the transformation from eMRTDs and national identification documents such as ID cards and driver’s licenses towards a digital identity. A digital identity combines a mobile device (usually a smartphone) with the identity information of its owner who will always carry it with them. Different providers enable governments to reduce the cost of issuing eMRTDs and national identification documents while ensuring constant security and service for the citizen. Furthermore, the digital identity can be expanded to visas and vehicle registration cards.

Government expect the Digital Identity to be implemented in full compliance with privacy by design, the GDPR and the NIST Digital Identity Guidelines . The Digital Identity for driver’s licenses is already standardized in ISO 18013-5 . Digital Identity is the next step towards completely changing identity ownership and paves the way towards Sovereign Identity and complete new business cases.

Different initiatives already enable governments to continue the digital transformation and to reduce proprietary implementation and open solution by orchestrating solution components from different vendors.
One such initiative is OSIA, the Open Standards Identity APIs working group. With open and standardized application programming interfaces, it is possible to orchestrate complete identification management systems from the enrollment process all the way to the issuance of a physical and digital identification document. The OSIA initiative is focused on the African market based on the UN directive 16.9 that strives to provide every human being with an identity.
Another noteworthy initiative is ID2020, which extends this concept to complete solutions with standardized interfaces and open-source software components.

In the last 12 months, established organizations published or updated several related standards. The ICAO published the digital travel credential, the Visible Digital Seal and the 8th edition of ICAO Doc 9303. The IATA published the ONE-ID concept for seamless traveling and the Travel pass.
There are also standards like EU green pass that support secure traveling.
