Identity documents have been around for centuries, with evermore sophistiated physical security features developed for fraud protection. However, the trend has been shifting towards electronic and digital security. One reason for this shift is the inherent vulnerabilities of physical security features, i.e. the ease of producing convincing replicas. In contrast, cryptography-based electronic security provides a more robust solution, offering advantages such as digital signatures, encryption, and online authentication. Additionally, electronic security allows for the storage of sensitive data, including medical records and biometric information. This presentation argues that for citizen ID, both digital and physical security features will continue to coexist, as both technologies are indispensible for sovereign identity documents.
